Prom styled Vintage Music Rendezvous for GLASGOW’S WEST END

GRANNY PROUD, organiser of Vintage and Craft Fair GRANNY WOULD BE PROUD, has teamed up with local artist and DJ Mr Kapow! to bring an exciting new vintage prom styled club night to Glasgow’s West End. This will be a night with a difference incorporating a vintage photo booth, ice cream sundaes, a “dress to impress and dance till you drop” atmosphere.

Fred (Frederique) Villain aka Granny Proud, originally from La Seyne-sur-Mer in the South of France, came up with the idea for the vintage and craft fairs over a cup of tea with friends chatting about vintage clothing and markets in France, she has just celebrated her first birthday as Granny Proud. The fairs were first held in the Argyle Hotel on Sauchiehall Street but as they expanded and more vendors were added the venue changed to Hillhead Library and now Hillhead Bookclub on Vinicombe Street.

Jamie Yates aka Mr Kapow! comes from Liverpool originally. He studied Fine art at Bath Spa University College where he started putting on club nights in Bath with friends in order to fund his Degree Show and exhibitions. He and wife Connie run Konnie Kapow! a small business designing and making wacky and offbeat greeting cards and artwork. Together they are two superheroes fighting to save the world from dull and namby pamby greeting cards. They met Fred as vendors for Granny Would Be Proud and really hit it off when they discovered a mutual appreciation for French Pop songstress Lio’s 1983 hit “La Banana Split”. Before long conversation turned to the lack of a proper club night in the West End, an event where everyone is welcome and feels part of, particularly since the demise of The Woodside Social Club.

“There’s such a huge mix of people in Glasgow who come to Granny Would be Proud, we’ve got goths, punks, retro people, teddy boys, rockers... We’re trying to do something that pleases everyone and every age so we’ll be playing a lot of different music, a blend of northern soul, funk, rock n’ roll, rockabilly and pop but with some newer stuff every once in a while. The theme is 1950s prom style – think Back to the Future’s “Enchantment under the sea” dance - so expect miles of bunting and over the top decorations. There vintage photo booth run by photographer Brian Shannow will allow people to dress up with props and hats and have a memento to take home with them on the night. We’re also going to have a stand selling sweeties and ice cream sundaes in lovely retro dishes.”

Although the venue is at the university, this event is aimed at the whole community and not just students. Future plans for the club night include “Dance Move of the Month” where a retro move is sent out via our mailing list and professional dancers help the crowd on the nights to perform it together flash mob style as well as performances by bands and artists. Those who enjoy an eclectic mix of retro beats should join in the fun at Granny Would Be Loud. This is a place where you can wear that outlandish party frock or your crazy new hat without sticking out like a sore thumb, it is “dress to impress” although anything goes! Granny Would Be Loud is somewhere everyone should feel at home, just like at your Granny’s.
